These two films visualise the speed of rotation of the earth. Two lights flashing out of sync were positioned one mile apart, along a line of latitude. The duration between the flashes represents the time it would take the earth to rotate 1 mile at that latitude. Because the speed of the earth’s rotation changes according to latitude, the time between flashes is variable.
